Safety Reimagined: Proposed Upgrades for Sausalito's Hazardous Bridgeway Boulevard
The Sausalito Pedestrian and Bicycle Advisory Committee has unanimously recommended safety enhancements for a perilous stretch of Bridgeway Boulevard, following a troubling history of bicycle accidents in the area. With a significant increase in cyclists and the absence of crosswalks, the project aims to introduce two one-way bike lanes and pedestrian crossings on the roadway.
Recent statistics indicate that between 2014 and 2024, there were nine crashes resulting in injuries—three attributed to unsafe motor vehicle speeds—underscoring the need for these upgrades. The city's efforts gained momentum after receiving grants totaling over $570,000 for the project's design and construction, a recognition of the high bike traffic along this crucial north-south route.
Currently, vehicles and bicycles share limited space, leading to safety concerns as cyclists navigate congested lanes. David Parisi from Parametrix laid out several design options, including the possibility of reallocating the middle lane, a controversial move among residents who value its function as a pedestrian refuge.
While many support the addition of bike lanes and safety features, concerns about emergency access and impacts on local businesses were voiced during discussions. The committee proposes a curbside management system to balance parking and safety needs. With the City Council set to review these recommendations soon, the future of Bridgeway Boulevard may soon be on a new path toward enhanced safety and accessibility for all.
