Enhancing Safety at Dewey Beach: Public Safety Project Takes Shape

The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) will kick off the next phase of the Dewey Beach Public Safety Project the week of Dec. 2, aiming to improve pedestrian safety along Route 1. This ongoing initiative, expected to conclude in March 2025, includes updates to sidewalks, improved signage, and enhanced crosswalk visibility with lower yellow beacons. The project will also see the extension of the "Dewey Wave" rope barrier to curb jaywalking and promote crosswalk usage.

Significant past improvements include reducing the speed limit to 25 mph, installing numerous crosswalk signs and markings, and enforcing speed regulations with local police. Future plans feature additional measures to boost safety further, although the street paving is postponed until fall 2025. DelDOT and Dewey Beach officials continue to prioritize pedestrian safety in this coastal community.
